Hope Springs Eternal…or, it’s Spring Training!!!!

Yes, it is the time of year we here in New England glory in this rites of Spring. Our beloved Red Sox are once again on the field of play, albeit in Florida, for the annual kick off to Spring, and another season of high hopes. We have reason to be optimistic in spite of finishing in last place three of the past four seasons. It’s another season, all that is water under the Mystic bridge. We have the team, we have the fans, and dammit, we deserve it. However, just to be safe, I’ve decided to write a letter to the newly crowned King in Sox baseball, Dave Dombrowski, offering my sage advice…just to be sage..errr…safe.

Dear Mr. Dombrowski,

Let me take this opportunity to welcome you to the Red Sox. I believe you are the right man, at the right time, to do what needs to be done.

I am not a member of the “pink hat” society of Sox fans. I watched Teddy Ballgame take his final at bat, and I’ve followed the Sox ever since. I appreciate tradition, respect the game itself, yet I understand the need to create as many streams of revenue as possible-these days. It is what it is.

You say you are 100% behind th’ Panda. That’s good! It will take you and every member of your management staff-“standing behind Pablo” to create enough energy and power to push his fat ass out the door. Please do this as soon as possible. This way, we all can move on to what is important. The Sox returning to the World Series. I dont doubt for a moment, the talent, and the chemistry, to accomplish this is at hand. Please do not screw this up.

Move Swihart to 3B-he has the athletic agility to be extremely good at the position, and can serve as the emergency 3rd catcher on the roster. We all know what a cannon Vasquez has for an arm behind the dish, and Hannigan gives us the grizzled veteran’s presence needed. This, theoretically, opens up a spot on the bench. Let’s give that kid Marerro a shot. He’s a contact hitter, who can play several infield positions well, and steal a base.

The pitching staff/bullpen/and the rest of the roster is pretty well set…and it’s a good one…a damn good one. Hanley may prove to be adequate at 1B and he can certainly hit…and hey, us old timers will get a kick out of how he channels Manny.

You can thank me later.

Respectfully,

Mitch Littlefield.

I was born into a large family in the mid 1950s, in Belfast, Maine. My family owned and operated three working farms during my childhood, and the entire family worked these farms. It is these formative years, this family, those farms, and that way of life that is the background for these stories.
